SK Holdings to Acquire CDMO Ampac Fine Chemicals

SK Holdings, a Seoul, South Korea-based holding company of SK Group, has agreed to acquire Ampac Fine Chemicals (AFC), a Rancho Cordova, California-headquartered contract manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates.

AFC offers several specialized technologies, including production of highly energetic compounds at commercial scale. AFC’s other technology platforms include production of highly potent compounds, continuous processes, and industrial-scale chromatographic separation using simulated moving bed chromatography. In addition, AMPAC Analytical also provides testing services to the pharmaceutical industry. AFC’s operations are located in Rancho Cordova and El Dorado Hills, California, La Porte, Texas, and Petersburg, Virginia. Since February 2014, AFC has been owned by H.I.G. Capital, a global private-equity firm.

The acquisition of AFC is the second recent acquisition by SK to grow its contract API manufacturing services. In January 2018, SK biotek, the life-sciences arm of SK for custom chemical development, advanced intermediates and API manufacturing, completed its acquisition of a former Bristol-Myers Squibb’s (BMS) API manufacturing facility in Swords, Ireland (outside of Dublin). The transaction included the transfer of approximately 350 BMS employees to SK. The addition of the 21-acre site adds 82 cubic meters of reactor capacity. The acquisition provides SK with additional manufacturing capacity as well as a European footprint. SK biotek plans to operate and develop the Swords campus as a stand-alone contract development manufacturing organization.
