Merck & Co. To Build Biologics Mfg Facility in Ireland

Merck & Co. plans to build a second biomanufacturing manufacturing facility at its site in Carlow, Ireland that will focus on producing vaccines and biologics. It will also expand warehouse and laboratory services at the site.

The facility will create approximately 170 new jobs, according to information from IDA Ireland, a non-commercial, semi-state body promoting foreign direct investment in Ireland.

The new investment is in addition to two earlier investments announced by the company in Ireland. Earlier this year (February 2018), the company announced it is building a new biomanufacturing facility at the site of its former facility in Swords, County Dublin. In May 2017, that the company announced plans to invest EUR 280 million ($350 million) over the next several years at two of its manufacturing sites in Ireland: Brinny, County Cork and Carlow, Ireland.

The company’s Brinny, County Cork site is an integrated site for the development, testing, and manufacturing of biologics, specializing in the fermentation, purification and sterile filling of biologic products. Merck & Co.’s site in Carlow is a vaccine and biologics manufacturing facility.
