President Donald J. Trump has nominated Alex Michael Azar II, a former executive of Eli Lilly and Company, to be the Secretary of the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).

Azar is currently the chairman of Seraphim Strategies, a financial-services company in Boynton Beach, Florida. Azar has served in several senior roles in the public and private sectors. As president of Lilly USA, the US affiliate of Eli Lilly and Company, he led the US Biomedicines business unit, which included areas in neuroscience, cardiovascular health, men’s health, musculoskeletal, autoimmune disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and pain as well as the sales, marketing, and payer operations of the company’s US commercial business. Prior to his tenure at Lilly USA, Azar served as the HHS Deputy Secretary and General Counsel at HHS.
